Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a fairly common psychiatric condition that usually presents in childhood but also continues throughout adulthood. The diagnosis in adults with ADHD tends to be more difficult and is often masked by the presence of other psychiatric symptoms. Stimulant medications like methylphenidate (Ritalin) and others tend to be the most commonly used pharmaceuticals for managing ADHD symptoms.

I have a particular interest in mental health since part of my work involves managing the medical care of a mental health inpatient population. I am particularly interested in the role of nutritionals in mental health. Quite impressively, the first randomized control trial was just published in the British Journal of Psychiatry comparing comprehensive multivitamin and mineral supplementation versus placebo to adults with ADHD who were not on psychiatric pharmaceuticals. The micronutrient treatment group demonstrated statistically significant improvement in several indices from ADHD symptoms to global assessment of functioning. Specifically there was a greater improvement in inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity compared to those taking a placebo. What is really impressive is that this was just an 8 week trial so the benefits were seen quickly. This appears to have been a well-designed trial and importantly it was blinded and placebo controlled. There was no way to tell who was receiving placebo because even the placebo pills were designed to darken the urine just like those taking the vitamins.

I believe that further research will demonstrate significant benefits from the role of comprehensive micronutrient supplementation in other mental health conditions and I look forward to more supportive clinical trials like this one.
