This past week, Dr. Oz did an informative segment on his television show entitled "What's Really in Your Herbal Supplements?" going in to more detail as per my previous post last week on this subject. In Part 2 of the segment, he interviews Dr. Todd Cooperman president of Consumer Labs who suggests looking for the seals of Consumer Lab, NSF and USP, all third party testing agencies. Dr. Oz verified with the FDA that "dietary manufacturers and distributors are not require to obtain approval from the FDA before marketing dietary supplements. Before a firm markets a dietary supplement, the firm is responsible for ensuring that the products it manufactures or distributes are safe." Dr. Oz makes the push to only buy high quality products, in the hopes that the bad guys go bankrupt. Unfortunately in my opinion, not enough consumers do their homework to make this a reality. But, it helps to spread the word to make consumers more informed, which is my hope as well.
